The Spin | DJ Dimitri goes global at Byblos on Sunday nights

For The Inquirer

South Philadelphian Dimitri Thrasyvoulou, also known as DJ Dimitri, makes Sunday nights international nights at Byblos.

"Greek International Night" attracts college students, urban professionals and regular partygoers, so DJ Dimitri has many musical tastes to satisfy in one night. "People like the variety of the music. I look at the crowd. If the crowd is international, then I play to the crowd," the 30-year-old says.

The music style ranges from dance to hip-hop, Lebanese, Arabic, Egyptian, and Greek music. Among the artists he features are Shakira, Lebanese world-music singer Nancy Ajram, Greek singer Sarbel, and reggae artist Sean Paul.

DJ Dimitri usually does the Middle Eastern portion of his music set with DJ Michael Sawan. DJ Dimitri has been spinning at Byblos for eight months.

"His music is a mixture of Arabic and Greek. I'm originally from Greece, so it reminds me of home," says regular partygoer Effie Kyria, 35, of Philadelphia.

In addition to great international music to keep the crowd dancing, partygoers can enjoy the belly dancers who entertain the crowd on the dance floor or at their tables. Free belly-dance classes are included on international night.

"I love Arabic music and belly dancing. I teach belly dance, so I support belly dance culture," says Toni Florencio of Philadelphia.

Hookahs, smoking vases, and cuisine are also popular attractions at Byblos.

"I like the food. I love the music and hookahs. Different people from different nationalities come here, and the ladies are hot," says 36-year-old partygoer Danny Ganon of Wynnewood.

"People like my night because they like something different," says DJ Dimitri. "They are seeing things that they don't see in most clubs, like belly dancers dancing on the tables," he adds jokingly.

"Greek International Night" with DJ Dimitri, 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Sunday nights at Byblos, 114 S. 18th St. Admission: Free. Complimentary belly-dance classes 9-10 p.m. Information: 215-568-3050 or http://www.byblosphilly.com/.
